Background:

According to Chippewa County Code of Ordinances 2-83 and 2-84 Chippewa County Courts shall impose a crime prevention surcharge in the amount of $20 per count involving a misdemeanor or felony conviction whenever the court imposes a sentence or places a person on probation pursuant to WI State Statute 973.0455.  All funds shall be placed in an account for use by the Crime Prevention Funding Board created in accordance with WI State Statute 59.54(28).  The surcharge is used to award organizations and law enforcement agencies with an established crime prevention fund for crime prevention programs in the community.

Funding Board Consists Of:

  • The presiding Judge of the Circuit Court, or his/her designee
  • The District Attorney, or his or her designee
  • The Sheriff, or his or her designee
  • The County Executive, or his or her designee
  • The Mayor of the largest municipality, or his or her designee
  • A person chosen by a majority vote by the Sheriff and all of the chiefs of police departments within the county
  • A person chosen by the county's public defenders office

The Criminal Justice Services Director provides assistance in the development and posting of agendas, meeting minutes, and other correspondence.

Eligibility for Grant Funds:

  • Nonprofit organization within Chippewa County that has as its primary purpose preventing crime, providing a funding source for crime prevention programs, encouraging the public to report crime, or assisting law enforcement agencies in the apprehension of criminal offenders.
  • A law enforcement agency within the county that has a crime prevention fund, if the contribution is credited to the crime prevention fund and is used for crime prevention purposes.

How to Apply for Funds:

  • Completed applications should be submitted to the Criminal Justice Services Director to be reviewed by the Chippewa County Crime Prevention Funding Board.  If the application is approved, the Funding Board will award the funds to a permissible organization (s) for the selected program.
  • If awarded, at the conclusion of the grant program, successful applicants must complete a brief follow-up report.
  • There is no grant limit.  The amount of the grant offered will be announced in the grant process, which will occur once a year during the month of February. This will occur in May in 2025.
