Chippewa County Highway Department employs approximately 75 full-time employees and hires up to 11 seasonal employees each year. Work crews are involved in the construction/reconstruction of roads and bridges and the production of bituminous asphalt and road aggregates. The services that are provided by the Highway Department require substantial machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Standard preventative maintenance and repairs to all highway and non-highway Chippewa County fleet vehicles are performed in the Highway Shops.
In addition to constructing and maintaining the County Trunk Highway System, our department is responsible for maintaining all Federal and State highways that are located within Chippewa County. These highways are collectively called the State Trunk Highway System. The department also helps to maintain town roads, village streets, and city streets upon request from local officials.
The Highway Department carries out summer and winter maintenance in order to fulfill it’s responsibilities to maintain travel safety and convenience on all county and state highways. General maintenance includes: patching, crack filling and pavement replacement; shoulder maintenance, roadside mowing and brush control; bridge and culvert maintenance; litter and trash pick up; guardrail installation and repair; signing; pavement marking and traffic control. Winter maintenance includes: salting and sanding for ice control; snowplowing and removal. Additionally, the department carries out road construction, pavement resurfacing (asphalt), bridge and culvert repair and installation, hot mixed asphalt production, gravel crushing operations and maintenance of roads in the county forest.
To effectively accomplish these activities, the department uses storage, maintenance, repair facilities and gravel pits at various locations in the county. Maintenance sheds are located in Chippewa Falls, Boyd, Cornell and Bloomer. Administration, planning and engineering are located at the Chippewa Falls location.
