Driveway Installation Permits

Anytime a new access point is needed off a County Trunk Highway, a driveway permit will be needed.  Permits must also be obtained if a revision or addition is made to any existing driveway/access point.  This includes any changes in land use which would generate greater traffic volumes.  Side slopes shall be earth material only.  No concrete, rock, stone, wood, timber or bituminous side slope shall be constructed.  This is a joint permit that is required by the Chippewa County Highway Department and the Chippewa County Zoning Department.

Work in Right-of-Way Permits

This permit is for permission to construct, operate, or maintain within the highway right-of-way.  This permit is used for any type of private work within Chippewa County Highway Right-of– Way no matter how minor the work may be.  Work in Right-of-Way permit applications are completed through our online permitting system only.  To access the form, please click the link below.

Over-Sized Load Permits

Anytime loads are over width, height, or weight restrictions, a permit is required to transport on Chippewa County Trunk Highway system.  Single trip, reoccurring, and seasonal permits require load size, route, vehicle, and insurance information.  Over-Sized Load permit applications are available through our online permitting system only.  To access the form, please click the link below.

Utility Permits

Any utility work within Chippewa County Highway Right-of-Way requires a permit.  With respect to maintenance activities on county highway right-of-way including trimming of trees and brushing for existing utilities, please be advised of the following:

An approved permit must be on file for the utility for the location of the work.  If the activity includes surface disturbance or lane closures or will involve significant time and equipment, the county may request a schedule, traffic control plan, restoration details, and additional information.

All work performed by utilities and by subcontractors working for utility companies is subject to county permit provisions for work within the right-of-way including traffic control and restoration.  The utility crews or subcontractor must have a copy of the approved permit on site.  Signing, marking and traffic control must be in accordance with Part VI in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for all work on public highway right-of-way.  (If signing and marking signs are not in place, the project can be shut down.)

White Arrow Board (WAB) Sign Permit

White arrow boards provide motorists with directional inforWhite Arrow Board Examplemation for qualifying tourist-related businesses, services or activities and are intended to direct tourists to the entrance of the facility or onto a local road where the facility is located.  These signs only list the name of the business on the sign; they do not list the mileage to the location.

Chippewa County does allow white arrow board directional signs within the highway right-of-way on county trunk roads with the issuance of a permit.  The sign dimensions mirror the state's requirements to maintain consistency throughout the county and state.  The State of Wisconsin allows WAB signs within the highway right-of-way limits of state roads with restrictions noted in the State WAB Sign Policy.  Chippewa County follows these same restrictions on county roads.  If you wish to pursue applying for placement of a WAB sign, please request an application by emailing highwayadmin@chippewacountywi.gov.

 

Tourist-Oriented Directional Sign (TODS) Permit

Tourist-Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) provide motorists with directional Tourist Oriented Sign Exampleinformation for qualifying tourist-related businesses, services or activities.  Tourist-related businesses, whose major portion of income or visitors is derived from visitors who do not reside in the immediate area where the business is located, qualify for TODS.  The business cannot have direct access to a state or U.S. highway but must be located within five miles of the state or U.S. highway on which TODS are to be installed.

TODS are only allowed within the highway right-of-way limits of state roads.  The State of Wisconsin provides a brochure and sign specifications for your convenience.  Questions regarding TOD signs must be directed to the program coordinator, Casey Amans at WisDOT Bureau of Traffic Operations, 3609 Pierstorff St., Madison, WI 53704 or you may email Casey at casey.amans@dot.wi.gov.
