Whether you're opening a restaurant, managing a campground, or operating a pool, our environmental health team is here to support you.

We license and inspect restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfasts, pools, campgrounds, and tattoo and piercing establishments in Chippewa County. Our team conducts inspections, responds to complaints, and works with businesses to meet state health and safety standards.

Annual licenses and pre-inspections are required under Wisconsin law (Wis. Stat. §§ 254.64 and 254.65).

Legal Authority & Local Ordinances

The Chippewa County Department of Public Health is authorized to enforce public health codes under Wisconsin State Statutes and local ordinances.

We operate as an agent of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) to license and inspect certain types of businesses, including restaurants, hotels, pools, and body art establishments.

Relevant state statutes include:

  • WI Stat. 254.64 (1) (a) No person may conduct, maintain, manage or operate a hotel, restaurant, temporary restaurant, tourist rooming house, vending machine commissary or vending machine if the person has not been issued an annual permit by the department or by a local health department that is granted agent status under s.254.69 (2).
  • WI Stat. 254.65 (1) The department or a local health department granted agent status under s.254.69 (2) may not grant a permit to a person intending to operate a new hotel, tourist rooming house, bed and breakfast establishment, restaurant or vending machine commissary or to a person intending to be the new operator of an existing hotel, tourist rooming house, bed and breakfast establishment, restaurant or vending machine commissary without a pre-inspection. This section does not apply to a temporary restaurant or when a permit is transferred under s.254.64 (4) (d) or (e).

In addition to state laws, Chippewa County Ordinance Chapter 34-5 establishes local rules and permit requirements for environmental health and sanitation. These local ordinances may include additional provisions specific to Chippewa County.

If you have questions about which regulations apply to your facility, our environmental health staff is here to help.
