Replacement of the County Highway M Bridge over the Chippewa River is a vital initiative and one of the Highway Department’s highest priority projects.  Situated in northeast Chippewa County, the bridge spans the picturesque Lake Holcombe, a hub for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts alike.  The current bridge, constructed over seven decades ago in 1950, is nearing the end of its life cycle.  This 798-foot-long structure, the longest County-owned bridge in the state's northwest region, has become obsolete due to its outdated design and deteriorating condition.  With numerous fracture critical members damaged and a 20-ton load limit enforced, the bridge's functionality is severely restricted, impacting crucial industries like logging, agriculture, emergency services, and transportation.

In the County's commitment to prolonging the bridge's usability, maximum weight limits have been reduced to 20 tons.  Strain gauge monitoring devices have been installed to monitor over-sized loads, educate the public, and improve enforcement efforts.  These efforts aim to maximize the bridge's lifespan and ensure its continuous operation, prioritizing the safety and convenience of all users.  The 15-mile detour for overweight vehicles not only imposes additional transportation costs but also inconveniences commuters and businesses reliant on the bridge's accessibility.

The preliminary bridge replacement cost estimate of $15 million for design and construction is a significant financial burden, surpassing the Highway Department's entire annual highway construction budget by 289%.  To fund this project with local funds, the County would not be able to work on another bridge or road project for almost three years.  However, despite the financial strain, Chippewa County remains committed to restoring full access and safety to this essential transportation link.  The future bridge promises to not only bolster local industries and tourism but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents dependent on the bridge for their daily needs.  Timely action and support by State/Federal agencies is required to ensure the success of this crucial endeavor.

The Chippewa County Highway Department is actively seeking out funding opportunities to help offset the high costs of this bridge replacement project.  Once State or Federal funding is approved, project design will commence quickly.  Bridge demolition would likely begin in 3-4 years from funding approval.  The construction project is expected to require closure of the bridge for 2 full construction seasons.
