Manages the production, use, and conservation of the Chippewa County Forest and associated public management units.  Plans and administers timber sales.  Manages wildlife areas and flowages.  Issues public firewood permits.

Plans County forest road and trail network and manages public access.  Works with user groups to manage and maintain County recreational trail system, including hiking, horseback, snowmobile, ATV, cross country skiing and Old Abe Trail.  Sells state trail passes.

Deer Stands and Ground Blinds in the County Forest

 No one shall use a stand to "claim" an area as their own.

In general, it is illegal to:

• use a ground blind during any open deer season or special deer hunt with firearms unless a minimum of 144 square inches of solid blaze orange or florescent blaze orange material is visible from all directions; Note: blinds used for waterfowl hunting are exempt from this rule.

• build or use a ground blind or any elevated device unless it does not damage the tree and is completely removed from the property at the close of the hunting season.

• leave a tree stand or ground blind unoccupied during legal hunting hours unless the owner’s DNR customer ID number or name and address has been attached in a manner that is visible and legible to a person on the ground or near the entrance of the ground blind; Exception: ground blinds constructed entirely of dead vegetation do not need to be removed at the end of each day, do not need to display blaze orange and do not need to have the hunter’s name and address displayed.

• damage trees. Cutting shooting lanes and use of screw-in tree-steps (or other devices such as nails or screws) is prohibited.

Camping in the Chippewa County Forest

Overnight camping including tents, trailers, cars and trucks, portable hunting or fishing cabins may be permitted in the county forest without charge for a period not to exceed two weeks time. This is not to include designated campgrounds where full facilities are provided where a charge for camping may be made, nor does it include any areas of the forest designated and identified on-site as "no camping areas".

 

Please note:  Groups or individuals cannot move from one site within the county forest to another after the two week period has elapsed.  Groups or individuals who leave a campsite that has been established for the allowed two week period must leave the county forest for a period of at least 24 hours, prior to re-establishing a camp in a new location.  ALSO: Any camps that are unattended for a period of 48 hours may be considered abandoned and subject to impoundment by the County.

Any camper or campers who violate County rules and regulations as established by the County Code of Ordinances, or of good conduct, including cutting or defacing timber, carelessness with fire, violation of game and fishing laws of the state or improper disposal of garbage and litter shall be subject to ejection from the county forest and subject to the penalties provided by county and state law.
