Pretrial Services
BACKGROUND
Chippewa County is one of seven counties working with the State of Wisconsin as a pretrial pilot site. The Pretrial Services area is in the process of being rolled out with the following mission.
MISSION OF PRETRIAL MONITORING
The mission is to reduce crime and improve the outcomes of the criminal justice system while maximizing the release of pretrial defendants, recognizing the presumption of innocence and the harmful effects of pretrial detention, maximizing public safety; and maximizing court appearance.
ROLE OF PRETRIAL SERVICES
Pretrial Services provides information to the court to assist them in the pretrial release decision through the use of the Public Safety Assessment (PSA). Pretrial Services monitors individuals released to the community pending future court appearance and assists them with barriers that may result in not following their bond conditions.
BENEFITS OF PRETRIAL MONITORING
- Allows individuals who have not been convicted the opportunity to stay in the community pending court proceedings.
- Opportunity to participate in voluntary programs such as employment, job skills, comprehensive community services, and substance abuse treatment.
- Provides individuals an opportunity to take advantage of diversion programming
