Recreational Patrol
The Recreation Division is a combination of one full time deputy and the reserve division. Deputy Jordan Sonnentag is currently the full-time patrol division member that has been assigned to the Recreational Deputy Position. Our Reserve division is currently staffed with four deputies: Deputy Bruce VanValkenburg, Deputy Robert Starck, Deputy Anthony Capozzi and Deputy Glenn Rehberg. Our Reserve division is a dedicated group of deputies that work shifts on their days off from their full-time jobs. These Deputies provide many hours to the department that allow the Recreation Division to be successful! Deputy Sonnentag, along with the certified members of the reserve division, operate our Snowmobile, ATV and Boat Patrol programs.
The Sheriff's Office Recreation Division Boat patrol is equipped with two patrol boats that are used to patrol the waterways of Chippewa County. The ATV patrol is equipped with two ATV’s and one Side by side UTV, which all are utilized to patrol the Chippewa County Forest and ATV Trails. The Snowmobile patrol is equipped with two snowmobiles, both are utilized to patrol the Chippewa County Snowmobile trails. The Recreation Division is tasked with patrolling the recreational areas of the county, handling recreational complaints, recreation vehicle crashes, and search and rescue operations.
Members of this division worked very closely with the Wisconsin DNR Conservation Warden’s assigned to Chippewa County. The Sheriff's Office Recreation Division works closely with the local clubs and organizations to help manage the trails and any complaints regarding recreational vehicles. Without the hard work and dedication from our local clubs and organizations we would not be able to have the amazing trails and waterways we enjoy!
Other responsibilities that the Recreation Division is responsible for is teaching Boat, ATV, and Snowmobile Safety to the local community. All material is taught from the WI DNR courses to ensure the students have the most up to date materials. The Recreation Division holds Boater Safety courses annually in the springtime, which requires attendance for all students to attend all three days of the course. Our ATV/Snowmobile Safety course is a combination course to allow students to get certified in both ATV and Snowmobile safety, which is taught annually in the fall. Students are required to attend all four days of the course to get certified. If you are interested in signing up for any of our courses, please visit WI DNR GoWild. Other Organizations also put on DNR courses, which are posted to the WI DNR GoWild website.
