The Chippewa County Highway Department uses posted weight limits to protect bridges in Chippewa County.  Not all bridges carry the same weight restrictions.  Annual inspections and reviews assist in determining what weights are safe for each individual bridge.  Wisconsin State Statute 349.16 gives authority to the Highway Commissioner to impose special or seasonal weight limitations on bridges or culverts when in his judgement, such bridge or culvert cannot safely sustain the maximum weights permitted by statute.
